Francis Lee Underwood, 93, of Cary, North Carolina went to his heavenly mansion on January 27, 2024.
Born February 17, 1930, Francis was born and raised in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania. The son of Horace and Hazel Underwood, Francis graduated from the Parkesburg School in 1948 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Parkesburg.
After high school, Francis started his career in the postal service, working his way up to Postmaster in the Parkesburg, Post Office. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army and served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. He then returned to Parkesburg and resumed his career in the postal service and married Carol with whom he had three children. In 1968 Francis was offered a position in the postal service as a Postal Inspector which took him and his family to Long Island, New York and Chatham, New Jersey. In 1986 Francis retired from service after 36 years.
After retiring Francis enjoyed hiking, working on his Marklin railroad trains, running the sound system at his local church and volunteering at Trans World Radio. He was devoted to Jesus Christ, family, and Church. His dry sense of humor was a joy to many.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Joan Crabbs Underwood, his second wife Mitzi Severyns Underwood, brother David Underwood and son-in-law David Ward.
Francis is survived by his son, Craig Underwood (Karen) of Landisville, PA, daughters, Mary Wilson (Kirk) of Cary, NC and Joanne Ward of Earlysville, VA, ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 10:30 AM at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main Street, Parkesburg, PA 19365 with visitation from 10:00 AM to the time of the service. Interment will follow at the Upper Octorara Cemetery, Parkesburg, PA.

I think one of the many
I think one of the many memories I have about Francis that stands out is watching him walk up the hill to the dining room, at Camp-of-the-Woods, not once but twice and sometimes three times. Most of us could hardly make it and even had to stop to catch our breath. There is no question, he was a very special man. He was loved by all who knew him. The joy he gave all will linger on in our hearts forever. Thanks, Francis.

A dear brother in Christ
It was a blessing over the years to spend time with Francis and his family. His love for the Lord and his family touched our hearts. His sense of humor put a smile on our faces with each visit. We enjoyed his dear Christmas cards/letters that he created over the years with words of encouragement and Christ centered messages. We send heartfelt sympathy to the extended family and will continue to pray for you.

Always A Gentleman
I was privileged to have been a Postal Inspector in NJ with "Frank". Frank was a seasoned Inspector when I arrived there from the academy in 1976, and he was always a gracious and knowledgeable "teacher" to the new Inspectors. He was well respected by Postal Managers and Inspectors alike, and I have never met a finer gentleman.

I had the pleasure of working with Frank in the Newark Office of the Postal Inspection Service. Frank was a true gentleman and terrific Postal Inspector. My deepest condolences to the Underwood family.

My sincere condolences to Frank's family. I met Frank at Bethesda, MD, as we were in the same Postal Inspector basic training class in 1968. We, four brand new Inspectors. shared an apartment for four weeks. Each of us was from a different state (PA, VA, NY & LA) with quite an assortment of Postal backgrounds. Frank was a pleasure to be around. He was the perfect gentleman at all times. We always had plenty of homework at nights and on weekends. he was the "go-to" guy when help was needed. Frank was assigned to the New York Division. I was sent to Philadelphia. I know he was a professional throughout his career as a Postal Inspector. May God Bless Frank and may he rest in Peace. I shall never forget him.
