Condolences

In addition to being a very kind and loving person, with seemingly no ill feelings toward anyone, Carl was a faithful member of Good Shepherd in the time I served that congregation.  He mowed grass, cleaned the property, greeted people warmly, and spread his smile everywhere.  But the most vivid memory I have of Carl is one Sunday, before worship had begun, in the sanctuary, Carl was looking out of the large clear glass church windows onto the valley below and I could tell he was in deep thought.  I went up to him, put my arm on his shoulder and asked, “What are you thinking?”  He turned, and with tears in his eyes said, “Today, as I look out on this valley, I see the same images here as I saw from my prison cell window in the prison camp I was in during WWII.  There was a valley beneath the prison, just like this one, and I remember wondering if I’d ever get out alive.”  And I remember that we both cried.  Thank you Carl for your service.  And God bless all who suffer from the ravages of war!
