Helen M. Young

Helen M. Young, 80, formerly of Gap, PA, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in Paoli, PA.  She was the wife of the late Robert Young who passed away in 2008.  Born in Coatesville, PA, she was the daughter of the late George W. Shickley and Minerva Kilian Hill.

Helen was a resident of Chester and Lancaster counties all her life. She enjoyed driving the Amish, going to church and shopping at the local Amish stores. She loved crossword puzzles and playing games. She was a fierce scrabble player, and even played by her own rules.  She loved being a grandmother and a great grandmother, and delighted in the time spent with her grandchildren. She loved to travel, and even in her later years would travel to visit her sister in Alabama, her daughter in South Carolina, and her lifelong friend Brigette in Tennessee, who, this year, preceded her in death.                                            

She was a good friend to all who knew her including her friends from Kings Way Independent Church where she was a member for greater than 30 years. She endeared herself to all her family, immediate and extended. Helen took much pride in being a mom. She raised three daughters, much on her own, and maintained loving relationships with them. She will be sorely missed. 

She is survived by her children, Debra Piper of Parkesburg, PA, Karen Souden and her husband, Michael, of Morgantown, PA, and Barbara Piper of South Carolina, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and siblings, Sandy Barker of Muscle Shoals, AL, and William Killian of Coatesville.  She was preceded in death by a sister, and a great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. from the Kings Way Independent Church, 55 Morris Lane, Coatesville, PA, 19320, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Interment with be private and at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Kings Way at the above address.
