Arnold C. "Sonny" Mattson Jr.
Arnold C. "Sonny" Mattson Jr., 79, of East Fallowfield, PA, passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. He was the husband of the late Lynn Diane Murray Mattson who passed in 2020. Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Arnold C. Sr. and Dorothy Mae Clevenstein Mattson. He was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Mattson of Milford, DE.
Arnold was an area resident all of his life. He enjoyed fishing and could always be found on area lakes where he was known to many as a "legend". He also enjoyed saltwater fishing with his sons for flounder and sea bass or anything else that would fight and bend the rod. He also made his own lures for fishing and would always snag a fish with his home made handy work.
Arnold also enjoyed hunting and trapping. He would serve his local area for many years in trapping unwanted varmints in the community. He took care of many farmers by exterminating groundhogs in the summertime. He owned beagles and black and tan coonhounds for many years.
Arnold's true passion was soul winning. Spreading the word of his lord and savior Jesus Christ. On most Saturdays he would spend the day knocking on doors to share his testimony with those who would be willing to listen. He was also affiliated with the "bus ministry" at Wyebrook Baptist Church. He would provide transportation to hundreds of kids so they could attend church and the Awana program on Thursday nights.
He shared his faith and testimony with others until the day of his passing.
Arnold and Lynn excelled at spoiling grandchildren and their nieces and nephews. They took them on many adventures from amusement parks to the boardwalk and beyond, making sure they all would receive love and special treatment. Arnold and his wife were always generous around the holidays.
He worked at the former Lukens Steel Company as a finisher. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Honey Brook, PA, and a former member of Wyebrook Baptist Church in Elverson, PA. He was a member of the Eastern Lancaster County Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his sons, John (Fran) Mattson of Coatesville, and Stephen (Terri) Mattson of Gap, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and siblings, Marion McGinnis of Honey Brook, Diane Hoag, of Ephrata, and Patty Dommel of Coatesville.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, from Wyebrook Baptist Church, 62 New Road, Elverson, PA, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Wilde Funeral Home in Parkesburg, PA. Online condolences can be posted at www.wildefuneralhome.com
