James “Jim” Charles Hurley, III, 86, of Quarryville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, surrounded by his loving children.

He was married to Dorothy (Dot) Jane Hurley for over 63 joyous years before she passed in 2017.

Born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James Charles Hurley, II, and Kathryn (Canan) Hurley.

James was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first. He demonstrated a strong sense of character for his children and for the Boy Scout Troop he led for many years. As a lifelong member of Our Lady of Consolation Church, James was active on Parish Council and served his church in many ways. Always a proud Irishman, he was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a skilled woodworker who crafted canes and walking sticks, and who loved to travel, tour National Parks, and spend time with his family.

James grew up in Atglen and graduated from Scott High School in 1950. He managed Devitt’s Hardware Store in his early years and went on to have a long career with Lukens Steel Company as a foreman and then a payroll accountant. He raised his family in Christiana in a home he designed and built himself. After retirement, he was a van driver for United Disabilities Services.

He is survived by five daughters, Debbra (Michael) Carrick, Susan (Mark) Swift, Ann (Brian) Appolloni, Lynda (Michael) Pritchard, Melissa (Michael) Hinton, ten granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren and two siblings. He was predeceased in death by his wife Dorothy (Lepore), sons Dennis James and Charles Samuel (Sam), two granddaughters Kristin Rebekah Swift and Jennifer Ann Carrick, one great grandson, Samuel Allen Felix and five siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 11 AM at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 603 W. 2nd Ave., Parkesburg, PA 19365 followed by interment at the Parkesburg Catholic Cemetery.  Viewing at the church from 10 - 11 AM.
