Gerald F. Black, 56, of Coatesville, died at his home on Friday, February 27, 2009. Gerry was the son of the late Ellis and Harriett Lawrence Black and was born in Coatesville.
He graduated from the Coatesville High School in 1970, and then served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1972 through 1976. He then went to work for the Postal Service, working in Parkesburg until 2007, when he retired on disability. He was Catholic by faith and was an avid Philly Sports fan. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW #4480 both of Parkesburg and the West End Fire Company of Coatesville.
He is survived by two brothers, George Black of Wilmington, DE and Charles Black of Water Fall, Pa and a sister Judy Zoccolo of Honey Brook and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amanda Jane Black and a brother Donald Black.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Tuesday evening March 3, 2009 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Wilde Funeral Home 434 Main St. Parkersburg. The interment will be at the convenience of the family at the St. Cecilia's Cemetery in Coatesville.

Dear Black Family, I was just made aware of Jerry's passing by Jim Moon, who lives in Georgia. His mother keeps up with local news via the Internet. I am most sorry to hear about it. He was a large part of my growing up, especially in Troop 40. The memories will remain with me of all the good times we had, and all the trouble we managed to find ourselves in, as well as some we managed to dodge. Rest in peace, Mo Cara. Chuck Persch

My thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the Family and Friends of
Jerry Black.
I first met Jerry in 1966 when I joined Troop 40 of Coatesville. We were
also school mates and graduated together from Coatesville Area Senior
Highschool (CASH) in 1970. We especially had many good times in Scouts and
we emerged through the years in the Senior Patrol and the leadership of the
Troop.
Jerry may have been a little rough around the edges, but deep down, he was a
kind and gentle friend whom you could count on. We lost contact in
1972--college years. Whenever I was in the area I would get together with
Chuck Persch and attempt linkups with Jerry. Unfortunately these failed.
Maybe we always thought we had the time later to make it up when we were old
guys in rocking chairs. As you can see, don't ever put things off!!
I wish I could be there tonight with Jerry, Chuck, and perhaps some other
good friends from those days to say some final goodbyes. Instead we send him
to God from afar!

I WORKED WITH GERRY FOR MANY YEARS AT THE POST OFFICE IN PARKESBURG UNTIL I LEFT TO BECOME POSTMASTER IN POCOPSON. GERRY WAS QUITE A CHARACTER!!!ONE OF A KIND. HE TRIED TO ACT GRUFF AROUND MANY PEOPLE BUT TO THOSE WHO KNEW HIM HE WAS A BIG MARSHMALLOW WITH A HUGE HEART. WE WENT THROUGH MANY UPS AND DOWNS TOGETHER AT THE P.O..WE TRIED TO HELP EACH OTHER GET THROUGH MANY TRYING DAYS, AND YET HAD MANY LAUGHS AS WELL. RAIN OR SHINE YOU COULD ALWAYS COUNT ON SEEING GERRY SOMEWHERE IN TOWN, EVEN WITH HIS BELOVED DOG!
GER WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF PARKESBURG. I KNOW I WILL ALWAYS THINK OF HIM WHEN I GO THROUGH TOWN.
I PRAY THAT HE IS FINALLY HAPPY AND AT PEACE. I WILL MISS HIM!

I'm so sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. He was one of my husband's friend, and he also knew George. I just found out yesterday that he passed away. My husband Stephen P. Killingsworth (passed away Dec.13,2008) was in Troop 40 also. Steve use to talk about some of the crazy things they did in the boyscouts. I still have some of his stuff from back then. Steve and Gerry are together again waiting at the pearly gates for us to join them someday. Now they are free from their broken bodies and can do things again that they couldn't do for awhile, like young children again. Steve liked to play darts with Gerry and Fish(Dennis Mahan) Gerry's body needed a rest and so God called him home. May God be with Gerry's Family and heal their broken hearts. God Bless you all!
