Derrick G. "Bubba" Mendenhall, 41, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Lancaster County, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Triscia Mendenhall, with whom he enjoyed a loving relationship.

Born in Chester County, PA, Derrick was the son of Paul Mendenhall of The Villages, FL and Inis Touch of Summerfield, FL.

After graduating from Octorara High School in 1988 Derrick was very proud to serve his country, in the US Air Force. Most notably, Derrick served as a Medic in Iraq, where he truly felt his calling to help others was being fulfilled.

One of the things that Derrick loved was being an EMT, the highlight of that time was when he helped deliver a baby in an ambulance.

Another area where Derrick's heart of gold shone through was his compassion for those with special needs, in particular the time he spent caring for one of his best friends in high school, who suffered from muscular dystrophy. With a servant's heart, Derrick was most happy helping others, as was evident throughout his life.

He is survived, in addition to his wife and parents, by his brother and sister-in-law Darin and Hollie Mendenhall, a niece, Kara Bethany Mendenhall, of Lancaster, PA, and an extensive family of aunts, uncles, and cousins that loved him and remember him fondly. He is also survived by his three cats, Moses, Boots, and Friendcat.

Private services will be held at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Derrick's memory to any local branch of the ASPCA, www.aspca.org/donate or to Operation Homefront www.operationhomefront.net

Derrick, you are a great man and it was an honor to be your friend. Although we have lost touch since high school, you have a way of touching everyone's life you came into contact with. I will always remember you as I am sure others will too. My most sincere regards go to your family and other friends.

We remember fondly all times we got together with you and Tricia for the PPVs. It was a fun time with lots of laughs. It was so wonderful being able to come to your wedding and share your special day. I know you are in heaven now waiting for the time the rest of us will join you. You are now out of pain and content at the foot of our Lord. But we will miss you very much!

Sorry to hear of the death of a beloved son. You were loved by both parents very much and thought of with admiration. Our sincere sympathy to Trish and know you made Derrick very happy. We never met Derrick but we sure heard a lot about him. He was truly a gift from God.

To Derrick's family,

We will always hold a special place in our hearts for Derrick for the love and compassion he gave to our late son David. Derrick was loyal to David to the end and allowed him to be a typical teenager sharing secrets, watching wrestling and movies. We last spoke in December on the anniversary of David's death. Derrick told me he had been thinking of David and wanted to talk with us. I was glad for his call and for the happy news of his marriage and the purchase of their home. I wish we had kept in closer contact. Derrick was a very caring friend and we send our heartfelt sympathy to his entire family. With loving thoughts, John & Alice Myers
