86 Years
Atglen, Pennsylvania

It is with deep sadness that we say our Mom, Grammie, Little Grammie and sister, Irene May Hawk, age 86, of Atglen, passed away at home on Friday, August 26, 2016. She was the former wife of our dad, George T. Smale of Parkesburg who passed away in 1976 and the wife of the late Theodore R. Hawk of Parkesburg who passed away in 1983. Born in Atglen in 1930, during the Great Depression, she was the daughter of the late John Norman Moore, who passed away in 1962 and the late Elsie Florence Radcliff, who passed away in 1991. Her paternal grandparents were the late Charles E. Moore and Clara A. Findley and her maternal grandparents were John Elwood Radcliff and Lydia Jane Lowe.

Mom was an area resident most of her life. She graduated from the Atglen school in 1946 and from Scott High School in Coatesville in 1948. She was a member of the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen at the time and worked at the Parkesburg sewing factory and also the sewing factory in Gap.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, crossword puzzles, watching Nascar, traveling, geocaching, going to yard sales and flea markets, and traversing the back roads of Lancaster County. In her younger years, she enjoyed ceramics, fishing, family BBQs and always having family gathered around the table at holidays. She especially enjoyed trying new restaurants (as well as the old favorites!) and, for such a petite lady, she could out-eat us all when it came to fried catfish!

Mom is survived by us, her four children: Darlene F. Wertz of Christiana, Wanda Mae Smale of Gap, Kim C. Smale and wife Melonie of Freidans, and Michael J. Smale and wife Ann of Gap; three grandchildren, Melissa A. Price of Paradise, Marah Mae Murphy of South Hill, Virginia, and Robert L. Murphy, Jr. husband of Jennifer Peek Murphy of Spout Spring, Virginia; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley A. Powell of Lancaster, Fredrick Price of Gap, Holly Mae, Austin Lee and Madison "Maddy" Katiemay Michael, all of South Hill, Virginia, Braden, Darin, Bryson, and Deacon Murphy, all of Spout Spring, Virginia and Noah Smale of Freidans; two brothers, John Moore, husband of Joan Smith Moore, and Norman "Duke", husband of Sue Taylor Moore, all of Christiana; and one sister Doris, wife of Emory Walton of Lancaster. She was predeceased by a sister, our aunt, Helen "Jane" Morrison, formerly of Atglen who passed away just three days before Mom. She is also survived by her "adopted" grandson, Rick Worley, with whom she resided.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kochel and the staff of County Line Medical Center in Gap and Affillia Home Health of Lancaster. A special thanks to 911 dispatch, Keystone Valley EMS, West Sadsbury Township Police Department, the Chester County coroners and Wilde's Funeral Home. We are grateful for your professionalism, kindness and compassion immediately after Mom’s passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, PA 19365 to help defray the cost of the funeral.

Condolences

Wanda and siblings etc-  my sincerest sympathy in the passing of your mom.  She was one of my good memories as a child and best friend of Wanda.  Our mud pies were the finest.  I know the pain of the passing of your mother---keep your sweet memories close as you embark on the journey of grief.  Love all of you--especially my dear friend Wanda.
