George K. Worst
George K. Worst, 88, of Coatesville, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Harrison Senior Living in Coatesville, PA. He was the husband of Betty Hiller Worst. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Kelso and Anna Lantz Worst.
George was an area resident for most of his life but he also lived in Maryland, Virginia, Mexico, Florida and North Carolina. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1946 to 1948. He went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in Animal Husbandry from Penn State University. Following his graduation, he became a Buyer for Swift & Co. buying cattle in Maryland and Virginia. Feeling a need to return home, he completed additional course work at West Chester State College to become a school teacher. He was employed for 23 years as a history and economics teacher by the Coatesville Area School District before retiring.
While living in North Carolina, George founded the Sand Hills Pointing Breeds Club (SHPBC) where he served as president and board member for many years. George started the SPBC as a non-competitive alternative to field trial clubs for pointing breed dogs. With a small group of local members, the SPBC successfully held the four required AKC sanctioned hunt tests and became an AKC licensed performance club in 1999. From 1999 to 2004, the SPBC leased property to train dogs and hold hunts. Thanks to the generosity of club benefactor, Mr. Hank Wheeler, the club moved to its permanent 100 acre home in Jackson Springs, NC in 2004.
He is survived, in addition to his wife, by three sons; Jeffrey Worst and wife Romi of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, David Worst and wife Karen of Parkesburg, PA, Brian Worst and wife Saundra of Coastesville, PA, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one sister, Esther Nelms of Coatesville, PA.
Graveside services will be held on September 30, 11:00 AM at the Sadsbury Friends Burial Grounds, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, PA 17527.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Sand Hills Pointing Breeds Club, c/o Charles Tuttle, 4 Checkerberry Square, Greensboro, NC 27455.
