Dorothy Supplee Shumate, age 89, of Garden Spot Village, New Holland and formerly of Coatesville, PA, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2018.  Born in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Warren A. and Isabella Supplee.  She was the wife of the late Alvin D. Shumate, with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage in 1996.

Dorothy was born on July 14, 1929 in Coatesville, and she graduated from Scott High School in 1948.  She was a life-long member of Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, and she was an active member of the American Legion for 23 years.  She was employed for 9 years at Pepperidge Farm, and she worked at Provident National Bank for 7 years.  

Dorothy enjoyed many activities including, knitting winter items for underprivileged children and prayer blankets for Gardenspot Village residents, arts and crafts, gardening, cooking and family events.  

Surviving are four children, Barbara of Palmyra, Alvin husband Margaret of East Earl, Gary husband of Susan of Sadsburyville, and Kenneth husband of Gayle of North Beach, MD., eight grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.  In addition, she was preceded in death by her daughter Deborah and three brothers and one sister.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to both the nurses and staff in Fallcrest skilled care at Gardenspot Village and the nurses and staff of Hospice & Community Care for their constant and compassionate care of our mother.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service to be held on Monday, August 6th, 2018 at 11 AM at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg, PA 19365, with visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service.  Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.  

Kindly omit flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Garden Spot Village Benevolence Fund or Hospice & Community Care.

My sincere condolences to all of Dot's family. I remember visiting her in Pomeroy and every time I visit my mother in Garden Spot. She always had a smile and was a good friend to Mom.

My condolences. She was a friend to my Grandfather James Porreca. She also knitted a beautiful outfit for my daughter Andrea which she wore all the way out in Hawaii where we live.

My Heart goes out to the family. I enjoyed the time I spent talking with her she will surely be missed.   Heaven has just received another ANGEL
