Joan M. Sheehan, 76, of Downingtown, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the Pocopson Home of West Chester, where she resided for the past year. She was formerly married to Clarence E. Martin Sr. of Downingtown.
Born on January 12, 1933 in West Chester, she was the daughter of the late Anna R. Moran Sheehan and Cornelius M. Sheehan. She graduated from the Downingtown High School in 1950. Joan spent most of her life as a homemaker and was later employed by both Chester County and Brandywine Hospitals. She was an active parishioner of both St. Joseph's Church of Downingtown and Aston.
Joan was devoted to her family. She enjoyed the beach, bowling, word puzzles, gardening and reading.
She was the loving mother of eight children: Susan M. Stasny, wife of John, Katherine M. Snyder, Barbara A. Hurd, Gregory P. Martin, husband of Jamie, Douglas E. Martin, husband of Andrea, James B. Martin, husband of Glenna, Clarence E. Martin Jr., husband of Susan, all of Downingtown and Jean M. Sciarretta, wife of Richard, of Cochranville; her sisters, Ann Bowman and Barbara Welch and her brothers Jack Sheehan, C. Thomas Sheehan, Fred Sheehan and James Sheehan, 26 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by one grandchild and one great grandchild.
The viewing will be held on both Thursday evening May 28, 2009 at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Friday morning, May 29, 2009 at St. JosephÕs Church, 338 Manor Avenue, Downingtown, PA at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment at the St. Joseph's Cemetery.
