Mary LaVelle Smith, 92, formerly of Parkesburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the Hickory House Nursing Home, Honey Brook, PA. Born in West Chester, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Marion Burns Shoemaker.

LaVelle was an area resident all her life and a 1945 graduate of the former Scott High School in Coatesville. She was employed at the Coatesville VA Medical Center as a dental assistant and later in life she worked at the K-Mart Store in Thorndale. LaVelle was a member of the Parkesburg Baptist Church,  Parkesburg Area Senior Citizens and a life member of the Parkesburg VFW Post 4480.

She is survived by six children; Aleta S. Connell of Honey Brook, William Scott Smith and wife Lisa of Paradise, Kimberly MacLeod and husband Scott of Brewer, ME, Mark A. Smith of Ronks, Janita A. Matzat and husband Tom of El Dorado Hills, CA and Chuck F. Smith and wife Jennifer of Parkesburg, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two siblings Alice Shoemaker and Charles S. Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St. Parkesburg, PA followed by interment at the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to attend the viewing at the funeral home from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Parkesburg VFW Post 4480, 406 4th Ave. Parkesburg, PA 19365.

LaVelle was our next-door neighbor growing up in Parkesburg.  She was always a kind, thoughtful person and will always be a good memory for me.  Condolences to her entire family.

Aleta, Scott, Kim, Jan, Mark and Chuckie - my heart goes out to all of you.  She was a very special friend, mom, grandmom and great-grandmom - I am so very sorry for your loss.  Always will remember the good ole' days too many to list but especially camping with the little pop-up camper at the beach.....Much love and lots of hugs to all of you................Jill

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of this beautiful soul. I had the pleasure of being Mary’s hairdresser for a majority of her time at Hickory House, I loved her like she was my own grandmother, she knew all my kids by name and always was ready with hugs for all whenever we came to visit!! My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and thank you so much for sharing your Mom with me, I will miss her terribly!! With love, Kris
