Samuel J. Softchin, Sr., 98, of Gap, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at his home. He was the widower of the late Lillian Nancy (Peace) Softchin, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.
Born in Parkesburg, Sam was the son of the late Pauline (Pigeon) and Nicholas Softchin. He graduated from the former Parkesburg High School, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and McKaskey School for Blueprinting.
Sam served honorably in the US Navy in both W.W.II and the Korean War, earning the rank of Seaman 1st Class while serving as a baker. He was a member of the Parkesburg VFW Post 4480 and Christiana American Legion Post 865.
He worked at Lukens Steel for 29 years as a crane operator, at Oberthur Cards for 15 years. Sam was self employed as a carpenter.
Sam was a parishioner for Our Lady of Consolation Church of Parkesburg.
Sam loved horse racing, casinos, and sharing his many stories from the 98 years of his life. He loved living in the mountains for a while in Canton, PA.
He is survived by his four children: Samuel J. Softchin, Jr. of Gap, Sherry Mowday, wife of Dennis, of Gap, Sandra Smith, and Nicholas H. Softchin, husband of Pat, of Atglen; 15 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; and 35 great, great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Sam was predeceased by two daughters, Linda Lookabaugh and Lillian Helm; and his late siblings, John Softchin, Marianne Simone, Anna Kiss, Catherine Ogden, Rose Klunk, Julie Kaighn, and Nell Softchin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 4th at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Consolation, 603 W 2nd Ave, Parkesburg, PA 19365, followed by interment at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery in Parkesburg. The viewing will be held on Thursday evening, November 3rd from 6 until 8 PM at Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg.
