Rev. Leonard Nathan Stewart

March 3, 1948 — March 6, 2016

Rev. Leonard Nathan Stewart, 68, of West Chester, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 6, 2016.  He was the beloved husband of Julia Van Loan Stewart.

Born in Tabriz, Iran, Leonard was the son of medical missionaries Natalie (Mahlow) and Ashton Stewart, M.D.  He graduated from Wheaton College and earned his Master of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary of Glenside, PA.  After seminary Leonard served as Youth Pastor at Knox Presbyterian Church in Silver Spring, Md. He later became a missionary in France for fourteen years where he pastored a church outside Paris. Upon his return to the U.S., Len served as Senior Pastor at Berea Presbyterian Church in Hockessin, Delaware and then as Missions Pastor at Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr. Most recently he has been a missionary among Iranians in the U.S. and Europe. Currently he is a member of Meadowcroft Presbyterian Church of West Chester.

He is survived by his six children: Stephane Stewart, husband of Nicole, of Exton, Pa., Aaron Stewart of Philadelphia, Sarah Shipley, wife of Will, of Manayunk, Pa., William Stewart of Schwenksville, Pa., Erica Lockwood, wife of Justin, of Yonkers, NY and Elise Stewart of Philadelphia; one grandson, Liam Shipley; five siblings, Rev. Ashton Stewart Jr. of Denver, Pa., Peggie Ray of London, England, Bill Stewart of Abu Dhabi, UAE, Louise Kemp of Lancaster and Ruth Wilkes of Atlanta, GA.

The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 1:30 PM at Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 278 S Bryn Mawr Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations in Len’s memory be made to Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 278 S Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA  19010 . Please notate ‘William Stewart Scholarship Fund’ in the memo line.”
