Mattie Ann Miller

May 1, 1934 — August 18, 2018

Mattie Ann (Dickinson) Miller, 84, of Nine Points, departed this life on Saturday, August 18, 2018, after being cared for at her home by her family.

Mattie Ann was the wife of the late Howard S. Miller, Sr. with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage before his death in 2004.

Born May 1, 1934 in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Howard and Gladys Marshall Dickinson.

Mattie was a “stay-at-home” Mom and joined the workforce for a brief period after her children were all grown. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who loved playing all types of games, attending sporting events in which her children were participating, watching sports on TV, putting together jigsaw puzzles, holding yard sales in her yard, shopping and taking short vacations with her daughters, and going on outings with her sons. She particularly liked watching tennis and golf and was able to fulfill her dream of attending the US Tennis Open in New York on three separate occasions. She always looked forward to the Christmas season and enjoyed setting up her Christmas village and decorating a tree. Most recently she enjoyed attending church, playing Pinochle, 500 Rummy, Dominoes and other games, and gathering with her children and grandchildren at her home.

Mattie loved the Lord and would always say that she was “blessed.” At the time of her death, she had been a member of Journey Church in Strasburg, PA since 2014, where she quickly became known for her hugs. Prior to joining Journey Church, she was a long-time member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Atglen, where she had served in several roles including steward, Sunday school teacher, usher, stewardess and church treasurer.

Mattie is survived by her children, Sheila Miller Thomas of Albuquerque, NM, Howard “Ducky” Miller, Jr. (Linda) of Lancaster, Arnold Miller of Coatesville, Diane Miller Brown (Omar) of Nine Points, and Wanda Miller of Atglen; daughter-in-law Charlotte “Chottie” Miller of Parkesburg; sisters Lorraine Lavender of Pocopson, PA, and Ella “Peggy” Anderson of Montclair, NJ, 14 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gary S. Miller, daughter-in-law, Darlene Miller and two sisters, Nancy and Marsha.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Mt. Zion AME Church, 404 Zion Hill Rd, Atglen, PA 19310 followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to also attend the viewing at the church from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. There will be no final viewing.
