Martha G. Williams

June 11, 1932 — April 6, 2021

Martha G. Williams, 88, of New Holland, and formerly of Atglen, passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.  She was the wife of the late James J. Williams.  Born in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Thurston Leroy and Frances Marian Mackey Girvin.

Martha was a graduate of West Chester State Teachers College and taught at the Octorara Area School District. She was a lifelong member of the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, Deacon, and choir member. She was a member of the International Wizard of Oz Club.  While at Octorara she enjoyed advising various clubs including the stamp, chess and the Odyssey of the Mind. She enjoyed traveling to various Civil War battlefields prior to and during a sabbatical towards the end of her teaching career.

Martha was a Cancer survivor. She enjoyed supporting the American Cancer Society through several sponsored walks while she was still able to participate.

Martha and her husband, Jim, enjoyed traveling to many destinations that included Hawaii and Alaska.  Family trips included vacationing in the Outer Banks. California vacations included visiting Legoland, Universal Studios, seeing Redwoods, a sand sculpture competition in San Diego, and visiting her cousin Margie Johnson. She enjoyed attending Broadway and off Broadway plays as well as opera. Her hobbies included music, knitting, word searches, brain teaser activities, jigsaw puzzles, and bingo.

She is survived by her daughters Winifred W. (Christopher G.) McGee of Elizabethtown, and Wanda W. (Timothy B.) Shank of Lincoln University, grandchildren, Kira M. (Justin A.) Young of Elizabethtown, James R. (Kristy) McGee of Smiths Station, AL, and Matthew P. Shank of Erie, PA, and four great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a brother, T. Galen Girvin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8th at 10 AM at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, PA 19310 with a visitation from 9 AM until the time of the service.  A brief interment will follow the service.
