Justus M. “Jay” Hogeland, 88, a seven year resident of Garden Spot Village in New Holland, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Formerly a 58 year resident of Feasterville, PA, he was the beloved husband of Marion Ryan Hogeland with whom he shared nearly 65 years of marriage. Born in Huntingdon Valley, he was the son of the late Justus M. Hogeland, Sr and Jessie Stalford Hogeland.
Jay served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute for 18 months. He was then employed for 33 years by Western Electric as a supervisor. Through his work at Western Electric, in 1978 Jay was selected to serve a term as Vice Chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board for the Montgomery County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). He also served as a volunteer of Feasterville Fire Company for many years.
Jay spent his life living out his faith in action.
He was passionate about his love for God and people. A 60 year member of Somerton United Methodist Church, Jay served in various administrative roles but he was most enthusiastic about his mission work, often inspiring his family to join him on mission trips. He volunteered with Appalachia Service Project (ASP) for over 25 years and traveled with UM Volunteers-In-Mission to Belize and Puerto Rico. When he wasn’t on a mission trip, Jay would be found engaging others in conversation. Seeing all people with the eyes of God, he valued every individual independent of position or background.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen, wife to Allen Keller of Coatesville and Bonnie Hogeland of Horsham, PA, two granddaughters Jenny Manthey (Timothy) of Coatesville, and Katie Behringer (Andrew) of Drexel Hill, great grandchildren Ryan and Naomi Manthey, and one brother Donald J. Hogeland of Spring House, PA. He was preceded in death by a sister Marie Ann Pletcher. He had seven nieces and nephews. He was looking forward to the birth of his third and fourth great-grandchildren in March 2016.
