Joseph Jarvis Walters, Sr., 88, of Coatesville, West Caln Twp., passed away at the Hickory House Nursing Home on Friday, October 22, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Mary Livingston Walters, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.
Born on Thursday, February 9, 1922 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Estace Gershom Walters and Gertrude Jarvis Walters.
Joseph served honorably in W.W.II as a P - 51 Fighter Pilot, serving in India, Burma, Tibet and China from 1943 to 1945, receiving the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Joseph graduated from Purdue University in 1948 earning a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
From 1949 to 1950 he was employed by Curtis - Wright in the US Space Program. Upon moving to Coatesville, he was employed by the former Lukens Steel Co. until his retirement in 1982.
He is survived, in addition to his wife, by two children: Alison Metz, wife of James, of Yorkville, Ill. and William Walters of Fairbanks, Alaska; his daughter-in-law, Niki Walters; and six grandchildren, Jake, Evan and Drew Metz, and Abraham, Evangelene, and S. Joseph Walters. He was preceded in death by his late son, Joseph J. Walters, Jr. who passed away in 1995.
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at 11 a.m. at the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail (Route 10), Parkesburg, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing, which will be held at the Church from 10 until 11 AM.
