James O. Moyer, Jr.

James O. Moyer, Jr., 67, of Pomeroy, died at his home on Friday, January, 4, 2013. He was the husband of the late Marsha A. Smith Moyer who died in 2010. Born in Parkesburg, he was the son of the late James O. and Sarah Lyle Moyer.


Jim was an area resident all his life and a 1963 graduate of Octorara High School. In 1970 he graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and soon after began his life long career as a law officer; most notably serving as Parkesburg Police Chief from 1975 to 1978 and later as Chief Deputy Sheriff with the Chester County Sheriff's Dept. He was also employed, part time, by the Atglen Borough Police Dept. and the Sadsbury Twp. Police Dept.


In 1976 Jim was the recipient of the Silver Star of Bravery and the Policeman of the Year award by the Chester County Chief of Police Association for his actions in preventing an armed bank robbery in Parkesburg.


He is survived by three children; James O. Moyer, III of Philadelphia, Kimberly, wife of Jefferey VanDyke of East Fallowfield and Lisa, wife of Tim Mulrooney of Quarryville, four grandchildren; Joel VanDyke, Priscilla Mulrooney, Harry Smith Mulrooney and Chanel Figueroa, one sister Jacquelin Ellingsworth of Christiana, PA and one brother Delno Moyer of Cochranville. He was preceded in death by two siblings; George Moyer and Barbara Young.


Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2pm at the Hephzibah Baptist Church, 2237 Strasburg Rd., East Fallowfield, PA 19320 with visitation at the church from 11am to 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Chester Co. Sheriff's K-9 Fund, 201 W. Market St., Suite 1201, West Chester, PA 19380 or the Chester Co. Hero Fund, 820 Heatherstone Dr., Berwyn, PA 19312.
