Havard F. "Buck" Townsend

Havard F. "Buck" Townsend, 93, of Coatesville, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at the Brandywine Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Jane Hanna Townsend who passed away in 2012. Born in West Grove and raised in Cochranville, he was the son of the late Willis and Bertha (Hershour) Townsend.

Buck proudly served in the US Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant with the Occupational Forces in the Pacific Theater. He was employed by the International Mill Service (IMS) of Coatesville as a Foreman. He was a member of the Skerrett Masonic Lodge #343 F & AM of Cochranville.  Buck was also a member of the Christiana American Legion Post 865 of Christiana, PA.

Buck was a family man. In addition to being a loving husband, Buck was a devoted father and fun loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Some of his fondest family memories would include holidays, most notably Christmas Eve, many trips to the beach and even just a visit from his loved ones. He was a wonderful, caring man who would help anyone in need. He could often be found tinkering in the garage on his cars and working on projects. Many would visit him there over the years to chat or seek advice. His garage door was always open. He had a passion for racing which included spectating and driving in younger days. He was proud to be a Ford Man. He enjoyed watching baseball and supporting the Phillies along with his grandchildren on the field. He was a regular at the Little Chef to which he would take a daily walk and make friends along the way. Once inside he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends both old and new.

He is survived by two daughters; Peg Proudfoot of Parkesburg and Sheryl Townsend of Coatesville, seven grandchildren; Kelly Franciscus (Jeff), Kristee Pluck (Ivan), Bridgette Williams (Brian), Brian Dougherty (Jenn), Kim Strawderman, Beth Townsend and Lindsay Townsend, eleven great-grandchildren; C.J and Savannah, John and Sean, Kendall and Josie, Vincenzo and Viviana, Jayden, Zoey and Cheyanne. Buck is survived by his brother Bill Townsend (Hazel). He was preceded in death by his son Gerald E. Townsend (Pat), his sister Genevie L. Chesnet (Bub) and his brother Roger N. Townsend.

The family would like to give special thanks to Tim Proudfoot who always showed his dedication, love and support to Buck throughout the years.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 3, 2020 at 12:15 PM at the Friendship Methodist Cemetery, 123 E Friendship Church Rd, Coatesville, PA. To protect those at-risk, please wear a face mask and practice social distancing at the service.
