George I. Wills

August 20, 1932 — July 25, 2016

George I. Wills, 83, of Sadsburyville, PA, died on Monday, July 25, 2016 at the Brandywine Hospital.  He was the widower of the late Mary Lou McGinn Wills. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late George  W. and Helen Blair Wills.
George was born in Philadelphia and raised between Delaware County and Seaford, DE a place that he loved and was able to visit and share with his family many happy memories of his years growing up on the Nanticoke River. As a teenager he was a catcher for the Seaford Seagulls. He told us quite often how good he was and could have gone pro if it wasn’t for his knee injury. He joined the Navy when he was 18 serving as a first gunners mate on the USS Braine for eight years. While in the Navy he married his wife of almost 50 years, Mary Lou.  Settling in Upper Darby George became the father of 5 children and an Upper Darby Police Officer – which in those days was more than just police work, they also rode on “the wagon” which took care of medical emergencies. His name is on a plaque at the police station as being the officer who delivered the most babies in the township. After he retired from the police force in 1985 he moved to Chester County. He continued to keep up with the happenings on the force by joining the FOP. His love for baseball, especially the Phillies, continue through his life along with reading, camping, football (the Eagles), and spending time with his kids, grand-kids, great-grandchildren, his sister Nancy, and most importantly, his dog – Candie while she was with him. His sense of humor and kind words were what drew others to him extending his family even more. Most of whom now have nick names that only
George and those around him who knew where the names came from call them. Once befriended by him you got to listen to his many stories of his time in the Navy and on the police force. We are so grateful that he was able to complete all but two things on his bucket list these last few months. They were to reenlist in the Navy and to go back on the Police Force – two of the strongest forces in his life that along with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his dogs, made him the special man he was.

He is survived by his children; Donna Wills, Linda Wills and Donna Fisher all of Folsom, PA, Ruth Wills of Ocala, FL, Melissa Trice of Ocala, FL and George M. Wills of Sadsburyville, three grandchildren; Mike Wills and wife Jeannette of Ephrata, PA, Sarah Wills of Ephrata and Melissa Reem and husband Joshua of Elizabethtown, PA, five great grandchildren; Bryce, Tyler, Emily, Devin and Jayce and one sister Nancy Kelley of Secane, PA. He was preceded in death by one daughter Karen Heyman.
