Dorothy J. Bittle

Dorothy J. Bittle, 92, of West Chester, formerly of Pottsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the Paoli Hospital.

Born in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth (Straub) and William F. Bittle, Sr.

After graduating from Business School, she worked for the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education and then for the American Embassy Office in Washington D.C. as Secretary.

A highlight of her many assignments around the world with the American Embassy were when friends and family visited with her.  A special highlight in South Africa in the early 60's was when Lowell Thomas, world famous radio news commentator, author and world traveler called on her to take dictation on a book he was writing at the time.

Dorothy enjoyed Big Band music and jazz music, and attended many West Chester Jazz Festivals with her brother Bill.

Shortly before the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis in Teheran, she and other secretarial staff members were withdrawn and evacuated to Bonn, West Germany.

Dorothy always looked forward to family gatherings on special holidays and birthdays.

She will always be remembered by her family and friends who loved her.

Dorothy is survived by her two siblings, Kathryn Bittle of West Chester and William F. Bittle, Jr. of Cochranville; and her neices and nephews.

She was predeceased by siblings Ivan, Austin, Eleanor Bittle Sholley and Mary Ellen Bittle.

The service will be private and at the convenience of the family.
