Donald George Yeoman

January 7, 1929 — December 9, 2020

Donald George Yeoman of Atglen, PA, formerly of Coatesville, passed away peacefully at the Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness on December 9, 2020.  Born on January 7, 1929 at home in Highland Township, Chester County to the late Norman Caleb and Elizabeth Ogden Yeoman.  Donald attended school in Coatesville to the 10th grade and left to pursue employment as a meat cutter working at the Moore’s Meat Market.  He then left to work at the Producer’s Co-Op (egg auction) located between 10th and 11th Avenue in Coatesville until it closed in the early 1970s.  He then went to work as a meat cutter/butcher at Luken’s Cooperative Store located on 1st Avenue in Coatesville becoming the meat manager until the store closed in 1992, having worked in the trade for 47 years.  Don and Betty moved to Atglen in 1997 to their dream home and enjoyed their retirement years there.

Donald is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth of 59 ½ years and his granddaughter, Sherri Lynn Yeoman.  Also he is predeceased by four brothers, Norman, John, William and Herbert.  He is survived by one son, Donald Gary and his wife, Susan, of Coatesville; as well as a daughter, Donna Yeoman of Atglen and her partner, David Rice.  He is also survived by one sister, Janet March, wife of Lawrence of Ephrata, PA.  He also had numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews as part of his long joyful life.

Prior to his passing and during his life, Donald and Betty enjoyed traveling to Florida and visiting family there and in South Carolina.  He also enjoyed being outside and working in the yard and for many years was the caretaker for the grounds around the church he attended.  He enjoyed doing word puzzles, watching Phillies baseball and 76ers basketball for many years, and taking care of his automobile.  In his youth, he was also known to shoot hoops and play baseball in the park in Coatesville.  He was also the “pin setter” in the old bowling alley located in the basement of the YMCA.  He and Betty also attended the senior group at Penningtonville United Methodist Church for many years for fellowship and crafting.  Donald was also a Life Member of West End Fire Company #3 and enjoyed bartending there for weddings in the hall and in the club room.  He had many friends at that time and often met there for drinks, even one time going on a dare driving to Miami and back in a day.  Although his cronies Benny McKee and Jim Slody are now gone, he often spoke of their escapades and things they did at the fire company.  Donald was known for his soft spoken ways and kind heart and will be missed by those friends and family who knew him best.
