Charles Eugene Bernard, 92, of Parkesburg and Atglen,Pennsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. He was most recently a patient at the Gino MerliVeterans Center in Scranton, PA. Born in Parkesburg, he was the son of the late John Bernard and Dorothy Ross Johnson, and stepson to LeRoy (Bud) W. Johnson.
Charles had many nicknames; Charlie, “Choo Choo” or as his close family called him “Tunney”. Choo Choo, as most knew him, was an area resident all his life. He honorably served in the US Army during WWII, and later in Korea. It was in combat in Korea where he was captured by the enemy and held as a prisoner of war for 28 months.
Choo Choo (Charlie) was known for his famous train whistle, was an avid pool player and a long time member of the Parkesburg VFW and the American Legion in Christiana, PA. Charles was employed by many area residents as a handyman, his last job was groundskeeper at the Roller Derby Skate Corp. of Atglen, PA for over 30 years.
Charlie had a great sense of humor, and his jokes knew no bounds. For example, thanksgiving dinner would always include the joke (deleted by newspaper)
Charles is survived by his niece, Stacie Summers (and husband Roger) from Hockessin, DE, long time family friend Laura Young of Parkesburg, PA and several cousins and great cousins. Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Darlene J Kuhns of Parkesburg, PA.
Funeral services will be held at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main Street, Parkesburg, PA on Tuesday, August 20,2019 at 11:00 AM with a viewing from 10:00-11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Hopewell Methodist Cemetery, N. Guthriesville Rd, Downingtown, PA.
