Bruce C. Rutledge, 84, was a lifelong resident of West Caln prior to moving to Zerbe Sisters Retirement Community in Narvon in 2016, died at Zerbe Sisters on June 15, 2017 surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Flora Fay Rhone Rutledge with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
Having grown up in the Westwood area, Bruce was the son of the late Ralph M. Rutledge and Charlotte Slaymaker Rutledge and was one of eight children; two sisters and five brothers who all preceded him in death. He attended Coatesville Area Schools. Until his retirement in 1994, he was employed as a Millwright at Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict as a gunner’s mate and a “frogman” on the destroyer the USS Gatling. Bruce was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors and was a founding member and past President of the West Caln Sportsmen’s Club. He was a mentor to many, influencing a new generation of hunting enthusiasts. He was on the Board of the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department and a member of Brandywine-Goddard Lodge 383 Free & Accepted Masons.
In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by one daughter, Deborah Rutledge Deets of Downingtown; two sons, David B. Rutledge of Strasburg and James A. Rutledge of Coatesville; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 2:30pm at the Episcopal Church of the Trinity, 323 East Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, PA 19320. Viewing from 1:00pm - 2:15pm. Masonic Services at 2:15pm. Interment will follow at Hopewell Methodist Cemetery, Downingtown, PA.
