Elwood Simmons, 94, formerly of Cochranville, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Home.  He was the widower of Carrie F. Watterson Simmons, who passed away in 2006 after they had shared 68 years of marriage together.



Born in Sugar Grove, West Virginia, Elwood was the son of the late Grover and Ola Wilfong Simmons.  



A resident of Cochranville since the age of three, he was a 1934 graduate of the former West Fallowfield High School.  Elwood was a part of the Greatest Generation, serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  He was employed by Lukens Steel in the Test Lab and Maintenance Dept., retiring in 1982.  



Elwood was a faithful member of Cochranville United Methodist Church, where he served as sexton for over 30 years.  



He is survived by five children, Dennis Simmons, and wife Jean of Millersville, Joanne, wife of Jerry Franklin of Cochranville, David Simmons and wife Michelle of Strasburg, Gary Simmons, and wife Sandra of Atglen and Jennifer, wife of Charles Hadley of Cochranville;  thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; and his siblings, James R. Simmons of Cochranville, Mary F. Simmons of Wilmington, DE and Carolyn White of Phoenix, AZ.  



He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Criswell.  



Funeral services will be held Monday, August 8, 2011 at 11:00 am from the Cochranville United Methodist Church, Church Dr., Cochranville, PA 19330, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.  Family and friends are also invited to attend the viewing at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Cochranville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund,  P.O. Box 417, Cochranville, Pa. 19330

To Elwoods family- My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. Your father was a wonderful,kind man. I enjoyed taking care of him. and it was an honor and privilege to do so. I remember also taking care of your mother Carrie too. Such love your father showed her !! I know this will not be an easy time for you all, but may you find comfort in knowing, he is with her now and is in no more pain. And that so many others care.
