68 Years

Philip K. Johnston, 68, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Hershey Medical Center.  He was the husband of Elizabeth L. Johnston (Woods) of Lancaster.  Born in Syracuse, NY, to Philip G. and V. Dawn. (VanAntwerp) Johnston.

Philip was a graduate of Virginia Tech University and served 30 years as a civil engineer for the City of Syracuse Water Department.

His love of serving others and the Spanish language began with his work in Ecuador through the Peace Corp. He enjoyed volunteering in youth ministries at church including Awana and Young Life. Phil found great joy in sharing God's word on countless missions trips to El Salvador, Mexico, and most recently Honduras.

Phil was an avid adventurer and lover of the great outdoors. Often biking, hiking, or swimming as a way to feel closer to Christ and the people he shared the trails with.

Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Katie (Bryan) Segarra of Niagara Falls, NY, and Jack Johnston of Lancaster, and sisters, Carol (Boris Shmagin) Johnston of Minnesota and Linda McKeon of Syracuse.

A Celebration of Life memorial service is being planned in the spring, when details are completed the information will be posted here.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you honor his memory by way of donating to Young life El Salvador by this link HERE

Lifting the family up in prayer and mourning the loss of a special friend in Philip. We met by chance when visiting Eastern Hills Church in Fayetteville NY soon after moving to Upstate NY from El Salvador. Became quick friends and met often to pray, to play or to partake in memories as we started our church work, followed by the launch of Young Life in the city of Syracuse. We did life together and saw our kids grow up and our marriages blossom, later on we moved to the DC area and they purchased a house in PA although we maintained contact and kept following each other. We shall miss the intentional way that Phil loved, served and led, the committed life he had towards his marriage, his work and his ministry (specially the Latino community) and the sweet and tender way he cared for others. What a legacy this man leaves behind, I shall treasure the long conversations, his authentic way of living and his devotion to His maker and fellow man.

What a perfect picture of Phil! That's how I remember him, always (just about) upbeat and ready to encourage. We shared many prayer sessions together, and I will miss my brother's encouragements to bolster my faith.
