First, all of my sympathy and love to Pauline and Mary.
I've been struggling all week with why this loss is affecting me so strongly. My usual reaction is that this is part of life. And it is, but this is different. While I and most other people walk through life on a narrow path, Fred had a "presence". He carried a huge umbrella and invited most everyone under. He had great generosity and could relate to anyone. He knew his business and carried greater knowledge than he let on, but could still tell the funniest stories on himself.
While we didn't suffer the same kind of intimate loss as Pauline, Mary and the rest of the family, we all lost something special. An untold number of people are left with an empty space in their lives and spirits and he will be greatly missed.
