Karen Marie Flamminio, 64, formerly of Coatesville, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018.  She was the daughter of the late Ralph P. and Adele Grabowski Flamminio.

She was born in Coatesville on April 3, 1954, and was an active participant in the Coatesville Area High School, class of 1972.  She was a member of the swim team, student council, and was class treasurer.

Karen then graduated from Brandywine Junior College with an associate's degree and afterwards pursued her love of adventure by traveling and living in Europe until 1984.

She returned to the United States and followed in her father's footsteps in Journalism, graduating cum lade from Temple University in 1988.

A free lance journalist, Karen had many published articles in the South Philly Review while working as a paralegal for a law firm in Philadelphia.  In 1992 she moved to Brigantine, NJ, to help her brother raise his daughter.  She continued as a paralegal in Atlantic City until Post-Polio Syndrome left her unable to work.

Karen was a free spirit, with an insatiable appetite for life.  She was not restrained by convention or obligation but her great love for family, friends and animals had no bounds.

Karen is survived by her brother, James Flamminio, of Brigantine, her niece, Tera Brady of Thorndale, great nephew, Owen Brady, aunt and uncle Mary & Stanley Pointek, many cousins and her beloved dog, Spartacus.

Karen was the first person I met when I moved to Brigantine. She was a true and loyal friend! She loves the beach and she had so much fun in the ocean! This past year I have missed her walking her dog past our home. You tribute to her was moving to read!

Karen was a very special person to me and my family. She was the first person we met when we purchased our home on Vernon Place. She always had a smile on her face and a story to tell. One of the things that I loved about Karen was how she knew everyone's birthday and their horoscope sign. We will miss her very much. Vernon Place will not be the same without our Karen.

I am so saddened to hear of Karen's passing! We were good friends way back. We jokingly called each other by our fathers' names! I lived in South Philly (Review was our paper), & we tried to get together, but never could. She was always lots of fun and lived life to the fullest! Rest well, Ralph!

My sincere condolences to Jim and the rest of the family, I was so sorry to hear of Karen's passing. She and I had been out of touch for a long time, but we would occasionally send regards to each other through a mutual friend. I especially remember her in those magical, long summer days at Chester Valley, 9 AM swim practice through whatever time we decided to go home, the pinnocle games in the snack bar, or hanging with her and the gang at one house or the other on the 1200 block of Oak Street. Karen always had amazing energy and a big smile. I remember her fondly.

I am very sad to read of Karen's passing.  I have known Karen most of my life, starting way back in grade school at St. Stanislaus Polish School in Coatesville.  She and I actually had our first "sleep over" as girls.  I remember her loosing control of her bike and hurting her knee going down 17th avenue.  She indeed was a good friend and I will always remember her and her smile.  I last saw her in August as I stopped by her place in Brigentine just to visit.  My sympathies and prayers go out to you Jimmy, and her family.

To Jimmy, Tera, Owen and everyone in Karen's family, her friends, neighbors and all the little dogs and cats that knew her.

Some of you know me, but for those who didn't, I am Karen's best friend from Vernon Place in Brigantine. I met her shortly after we moved there in 1991 when my youngest daughter, Hallie was just 1 year old and my oldest, Raina was 6 years old.

Karen was our friend, neighbor, and forever a beach buddy. She attended all of our birthday parties, holiday dinners, First Holy Communions, Confirmations and other holiday events where there was a celebration. She especially loved going to the beach in the Summer with me and coming over on Thanksgiving and spending time around my big, loud family.

She was always a friend to me but especially when I needed one with a sympathetic ear and a big warm hug. She was proud of her Italian heritage as well as her Polish heritage. She adored her dogs, from her childhood pups, to Angus, Tango and Spartacus. She loved my dog and was godmother to my Golden Lab, Toby. He would get out from the back yard and run down to her house. LOL. She loved animals and knew all of their names in the neighborhood and the type of dog they were. She even loved the baby bunnies, squirrels and birds that she could see from her front window when she couldn't take the cold weather anymore. It was very difficult to watch her decline through the years and I would often bring her soup or dinner that I made for my family. I put her newspaper on her steps every day and then eventually, inside her storm door every day.

She loved her sports and would call my husband Michael on the phone during Eagles football season or March Madness. She was passionate about her Temple Owls.

I held her and cried like a baby when I went to the nursing home and she had passed just a few short minutes prior to my arrival.

Today would have been her 65th Birthday. Every year, I would do something for her birthday -- like go out to lunch, dinner or her favorite, have a dinner party at my house with Spaghetti, Meatball & Sausage gravy dinner, complete with the salad, Italian bread and vino!

This last year, we didn't get the chance to go celebrate her birthday...but she made me promise that THIS YEAR we would be having the "BIG BIRTHDAY."

I am sad that we cannot do that, but today I honor her with this short note, filled with my love. We miss her terribly!

So, raise a glass today to Karen Marie Flamminio! SALUT!

Mary & Michael Moyer
